Here is the part the industry does not advertise. Past roughly 400, a higher thread count does not mean a better sheet. Brands inflate the number by twisting several thin, weak plies together and counting each one, so a so-called 1000 thread count set can be made of cheaper, flimsier yarn than a well-made 270. A 270 thread count percale spun from long-staple organic cotton will out-breathe and outlast almost any inflated number built on marketing math.
GSM: the number that actually matters
If thread count is the number brands love to shout, GSM is the one worth listening to. GSM means grams per square meter, and it tells you the real weight and substance of the fabric. Too low and a sheet feels flimsy and see-through. Too high and it sleeps hot and heavy.
